Hawaii Hotel & Condominium Smoking Policies, from Family Vacations Hawaii
In November of 2006, the state of Hawaii instituted a strict new smoking law. As a result, many Hawaii hotels declared all of their guest rooms to be smoke-free. This has been a boon to non-smokers, of course, who no longer have to enter a hotel room with that telltale odor of "smokers past" lingering in the air. However, smokers aren't happy with such policies, as they won't be able to stay at smoke-free hotels unless they stash their habit for the length of their stay, or only smoke "off premises" or in designated areas, which are usually outside any public area in the hotel, e.g. places like parking lots and other outside areas that are at least 20 feet from any doors or windows.

Hawaii's smoking law is as follows:
Effective November 16, 2006 smoking is prohibited in all enclosed or partially enclosed areas open to the public in order to ensure a consistent level of basic protections statewide from exposure to secondhand smoke. The term "enclosed or partially enclosed" is defined under the law as any space closed in by a roof or overhang and at least two walls, including, but not limited to, restrooms, lobbies, reception areas, hallways, interior courtyards, patios, covered walkways, bars, hotel and motel rooms, lanais, restaurants, retail service establishments and retail stores. Hotels and motels may designate up to 20 percent of rooms as smoking allowed. Rooms must be on the same floor, contiguous and smoke must not infiltrate into smoke-free areas.

We too will not return to such an intolerant Island. We have traveled to Mexico and Europe since the ban. Nobody has a problem there! I understand not smoking INSIDE...but outside???? Don't you have pollution from vehicles, open fires etc. etc.? You do! What's next...only bicycles? Ridiculous!!

Good...all you smokers will be away from our hotel. There will be 6 adults going to Hawaii for the first time and thanks to the non-smoking law, we will be going back. I had to check to see which hotels had non-smoking rooms because 2 people have asthsma. Happy to find out about the no-smoking law! My father-in-law died of lung cancer. He said he wished he had never started smoking as a teenager...horrible way to die. You people who smoke don't understand you stink?...no matter how you try to hide it, your hair and clothes stink and anything you sit on! Your breath stinks, your nails and teeth turn an ugly yellow/brownish color. Give it up!

We just got back from Hawaii and our cruise was ruined by being surrounded by smokers. I think the longest stretch we were able to use our balcony was 5 minutes before one of the smokers would light up and drive us off. My right to swing my fist ends where your nose begins. I expect the same courtesy with regards to smoking.

I agree with those that state smoking should be allowed on the lanai - AS LONG AS THEY CAN GUARANTEE THE SMOKE WILL NOT LEAVE THE LANAI AND GO TO A LANAI ABOVE, BELOW OR NEXT TO THE SMOKER. Smoke all you want, just don't exhale.

I took my first vacation in years in October 2008, to Oahu. I was unaware of the restrictions. As a smoker, I found it very difficult to believe that I couldn't even smoke on the lanai. I found sneaky ways of having my smokes out there without alerting the cossacks, like blowing my used smoke into a beach towel. After that trip I swore I'd never return. Vacations are supposed to be relaxing, but this one wasn't.

The reason no smoking is allowed on lanais is that it infiltrates the neighboring area. I don't care if people smoke and want to risk their health but don't force me to retreat indoors when you are smoking on your lanai. Its just not fair. If the hotels could make it possible to keep your smoke from non smokers lanais that would be one thing but it just can't be done. That's just the way it has to be. I actually will go to Hawaii MORE often because of this law so it goes both ways - you will boycott and I will go more frequently.

Don't let the smoking laws stop you. We rent a house on the North Shore and see the real Hawaii. Most of the vacation rentals allow smoking on the lanai. We're headed back this summer and will bring our cigarettes.

What I have never understood is why can't there be "Smoking Welcome" properties? Surely there are owners or managers who smoke and want guests to be comfortable? Non-smokers would know ahead of time that THEY will not be comfortable and there will be smokers on premises and in rooms. Smokers would have a place for there enjoyment and needs. I realize the current Law ties the hands of owners or managers who want their propety to be smoking friendly but there could be hope for change if a compromise was the goal as opposed to an entire segment of the population, participating in a LEGAL act, being harrassed and banned? Surely, in this world of big brains there is a way for tourism and tourists to win? I am a non smoker but all my friends smoke and since none of them will go with me to Hawaii we are all going to Cabo but I would love to come to Hawaii one day. Won't happen as long as family and friends are not welcome.

My friend recently received an inheritance and wanted me to plan a luxury vacation for us to Hawaii. Won't be happening. No smoking means we won't spend our money to be harrassed and not be allowed to relax and smoke if WE CHOOSE. The news is full of stories about people being hurt by the recession and tourism suffering everywhere yet Hotels, Spas, Resorts and vacation areas apparently are doing so well that they don't need the money that smokers bring to the area. We eat in restaurants, we drink, we shop, we stay in hotels, we have spa appts. we buy gifts but apparently Hawaii is not interested in any of our business or money. Too bad. Hope all the non smokers and their spending habits keep the tourism industry alive in Hawaii. I recently had friends who live in Europe say they would never travel in the US again because they can't make their own choices about smoking. Mexico is a more tourist friendly area. They seem to be more than happy to have us and our money even if we are the dreaded awful smokers. Of course criminals, as long as they don't smoke, are welcome in Hawaii. I will spread the word far and wide that Hawaii Tourism is just fine and doesn't need additional customers or money coming in. Thanks for nothing.

I was all ready to book my 10-day trip with my family (2 adult children and they significant others 6 of us total) Then I found out about the smoking polices. If I can't find a place to stay where I can at least smoke on the Lanai we will not be going to Hawaii. What a harsh rule, Mexico is looking like a better option that's where I've gone the last two years with my family You get much more for your money and can have a smoke if you want.

I just got back from a trip to Kauai. I didn't know before I went about the smoking ban. I found myself standing out in the blazing wind and rain to have a cigarette. Cigarettes are legal to purchase. It is not a crime to smoke. I dealt with it until I got to the Honolulu airport with a 7 hour flight ahead of me to find no where to smoke. The cleaning lady told me maybe I could find someplace in the dark to hide to have a cigarette. This is rediculous. I am not a criminal. I should not have to hide. I am a considerate smoker and never smoke around others or inside. You can't even walk out in the open areas and smoke. I thought to myself that there are other things that irritate me that I don't like so are they going to outlaw noisy kids that scream for endless hours and misbehave, or the alcoholics that become obnoxious. Oh, but that is legal in the airport. Why should there be a law dictating morality for a single thing like smoking. I am outraged and feel discriminated against. I will not plan another leisure vacation to Hawaii. Even if I quit smoking because this is rediculous.

I am heading to Hawaii in 3 months from Australia. My partner & myself are both smokers & are so dissapointed after reading this site. The smoking laws are strict in Aust too but you can smoke on balconys & most bars have a nice smoking area outside undercover where you can smoke & enjoy a drink because they know the people who smoke are the people who spend money on drinks! They dont want to go broke, they want people to come back!! Hawaii- c'mon!!

Smoking stinks. We're actually having trouble now because friends want to join us on our Maui trip and the hotel where we're staying only has smoking rooms left. Most people don't want the thing they take back with them from Hawaii to be a suitcase full of clothes that smell like an ashtray. I'm fine with designated smoking rooms but it's a hinderance for us non smokers too when availability gets tight. I don't have to carry around an obese person or hang out with a drunk but I have to breathe and that can be pretty unpleasant when smokers are around.

I am a smoker thinking of making a 10 day trip to Hawaii next month and after reading this I'm not sure. I don't mind if they designate a spot where I can smoke but to tell me I can not smoke period what happened to my freedom to choose?? Predjudice is just that it doesn't matter who is on the receiving end. Will they also change the laws to prevent overweight people from eating fast food? Or drinkers must stop drinking because it is bad for their health? STOP BEING PREDJUDICED AGAINT SMOKERS like I said I don't mind a designated spot but don't ban me entirely.

Hawaii was on my list to visit but no more. I will not go somewhere where, as a smoker, I am not welcome. Passive smoking is harmless but so many are deceived by people who fallaciously state otherwise. In fact it is becoming clearer that primary smoking 'harm' has been exaggerated beyond all proportion. When will common sense return? How much damage has to happen before people wake up to this insanity. In the mean time I and my family will stick to holidaying in more progressive, tolerant countries.

I just spent the past couple of days researching and planning a 10-12 day trip to Maui with my mother-in-law in February. We're both smokers and while I did manage to find some places that would accommodate us I would still like to be able to enjoy a smoke with a drink and after meals or lounging around the pool without feeling like a criminal. I know it's a dirty, rotten, unhealthy habit (addiction) but I do try to be considerate of non-smokers and won't be forced in to quitting especially on my holidays! I guess we'll be heading to Mexico or the Dominican instead. It's cheaper there in the long run anyway.

Ridiculous! Will now attempt to change our reservations for a different sunny destination. Mexico perhaps?

I just came back from New Orleans, where they have a partial and ineffective smoking ban (restaurants only). The smoke in bars (and restaurants that banned people under 21 so they could call themselves bars) was unbelievable. I couldn't go anywhere without being assaulted by smoke. My next trip will be to Hawaii. All of you who want to feed your addiction in your rooms and balconies (and elsewhere), you'll enjoy Louisiana.

My wife and I were going to take a two week vacation in Hawaii but we found out about this senseless smoking law. Hawaii needs to lighten up and at least allow people to smoke on Lanais. Instead they rather loose money for their residents as more and more people will go else where. Don't they know that tourism is their bread and butter and that this stupid law will kill there locals. I guess the politician don't care about that though. I my self will not be going there unless they lighten up a little on there law.

For several years we've vacationed and done business in Hawaii twice a year, staying at the finest resorts, booking several rooms and meeting rooms, spending a lot of money on helicopters, boats, and we always buy expensive pearls, jewelry each trip, spending thousands each trip!. One time we brought around 26 of our employees/spouses. WE VOWED WE WILL NOT COME BACK BECAUSE THE SMOKING LAWS ARE RIDICULOUSLY RESTRICTIVE AND BECAUSE WE FEEL LIKE CRIMINALS! THERE ARE NO ACCOMMODATIONS, EVEN BENCHES FOR THE SMOKERS (if you can find a place to smoke!) We have a lot of smoking friends that feel the same way, and at our last convention Oct. 2009, all the smokers (and there were many) said they would not return because of the laws. We will never recommend Hawaii to any of our friends because of the ridiculous laws!

I as well just returned from Kauai, thank goodness I had no idea for the first 8 days that I couldn't smoke on my lanai, once I learned of that I found a hotel where at least I could walk protected a few steps to the beach. Is smoking good absolutely not, do I want to spend $10,000.00 being told what to do on vacation and not able to relax, absolutely not. Rethink this Hawaii. One woman I met in her 60's found herself in Waikiki at 3:00AM on the beach to have a cigarette and realized how dangerous that it was.

Just returned from a beautiful trip with my sister and mom from Maui - 7 days at Papakea Resort. What a shock when checking in to find out that you can not even smoke on your lanai or on property, (other than a dirty little corner in the parking lot)! So most of my time was spent in a this dirty little corner and was very unsafe for us women smokers. How ridiculous to make someone go to the parking lot to smoke - never, ever again would I go to anyplace that have these type of restrictions. Good luck Hawaii with getting your money spending tourists to come back - not me!

Being a long term resident of Hawaii and a musician, I can tell you first hand what the smoking ban has done for me. Even before the economy became really bad, we saw regular customers disappearing from the bars, then we saw less tourist right after that, this is because people like to have a smoke with their drink. I went from earning $200 to $400 a night as a club musician, to earning minimum wage washing dishes. The smoking ban has worked wonders for my pocketbook and my landlord is always mad because the rent is always late, he doesn't like the smoking ban either.

As a tourist destination, I think you should welcome all and not alienate smokers. Smoking should be permitted on balconies. I am not going to spend my hard earner money to have a vacation that is not enjoyable. Why not allow smoking on balconies? We are also smokers and are getting tired of the hunt to find smoking hotels. We have limited our trips from 2-3 per year, down to one because of these ridiculous laws enacted by Linda Lingle. What a hassle and what a bundle of money they are losing over there because of this. They blame it on the economy, but that's only half of it. Pretty soon we may be heading for Barbados or Nevis ourselves and giving up Hawaii altogether.

Most airports are very limited on smoking. Its a five hour flight minimum time. Then you come to Hawaii and cant smoke?! This law is way over restrictice.. someone needs to remind the law makers there that tobacco is a legally sold product and its use is legal.. except in cases where no smoking signs are in effect. Just think back when the anti smoking frenzy began.. did any of us think it would go this far?
